Governor Eno Hosts Petroleum Minister Ahead of LPG Distribution Programme in Akwa Ibom

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has received the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo, and his delegation at Government House, Uyo, ahead of the launch of the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas National Grassroots LPG Penetration Programme in the state.

The courtesy visit took place on Thursday, August 20, 2026, ahead of the pilot activation of the programme and the distribution of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders to beneficiaries across Akwa Ibom.

The initiative is part of efforts by the Federal Government to expand access to cleaner cooking energy, particularly among households in rural and underserved communities.

Governor Eno Receives Federal Government Delegation

Governor Eno received the delegation at his office alongside the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Akon Eyakenyi; Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah; Executive Assistant and Chief Delivery Advisor, Mr Aniefiok Johnson; Dean of the College of Commissioners, Hon. Frank Archibong; and other members of the State Executive Council.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the state government and Federal Government officials to discuss the LPG penetration programme and broader opportunities in the gas sector.

The programme is expected to increase the availability and adoption of LPG as a cleaner alternative to traditional cooking fuels.

Minister Leads Delegation

The delegation led by Minister Ekperikpe Ekpo included his wife, Lady Esitmbom Ekperikpe Ekpo; Coordinating Director of the Decade of Gas initiative, Ed Ubong; representatives of the Federal Ministries responsible for Youth and Women Affairs; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Mallam Rabiu Umar Abdullahi; and the Authority Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Engr. Felix Omatsila Ogbe.

Other officials and stakeholders involved in the Federal Government’s gas development initiatives were also part of the delegation.

The presence of officials from different government agencies reflects the multi-sectoral nature of the LPG programme, which combines energy access with economic empowerment and social development.

LPG Programme Targets Households

The Decade of Gas National Grassroots LPG Penetration Programme is designed to promote the use of LPG for domestic cooking and expand access to cleaner energy.

In Akwa Ibom, the programme targets 27,000 households with LPG cylinders, with particular attention to women, youths and vulnerable households.

The intervention is expected to help beneficiaries transition from traditional cooking fuels to cleaner cooking options.

In addition to its potential environmental benefits, increased LPG adoption could create opportunities for businesses involved in LPG distribution, transportation, cylinder maintenance, storage and other areas of the downstream gas value chain.

Gas Sector Offers Investment Opportunities

Akwa Ibom is an important oil and gas-producing state, and the state government has continued to highlight opportunities for investment in the sector.

Governor Eno has previously described gas as an important resource for industrial development, job creation and the expansion of small and medium-sized enterprises.

The state has also expressed interest in attracting investments across areas such as LPG processing and distribution, gas-based manufacturing, storage facilities, transportation and logistics.

The growing emphasis on gas utilisation comes as Nigeria seeks to increase domestic consumption of its natural gas resources and reduce dependence on traditional cooking fuels.

Women and Economic Empowerment

The LPG initiative also has an economic empowerment component, particularly for women.

Women often play a significant role in household energy decisions and small-scale businesses, making access to affordable and reliable cooking energy important for household welfare and enterprise development.

The Federal Government has linked the programme to its wider Renewed Hope agenda, while the Akwa Ibom State Government has also identified women’s empowerment as an important part of its development programme.

The collaboration between the state and Federal Government could therefore provide opportunities to combine clean-energy access with entrepreneurship and livelihood support.

Strengthening Federal-State Partnership

The visit by Minister Ekperikpe Ekpo underscores the growing collaboration between Akwa Ibom and the Federal Government in the development of the gas sector.

For the state, the LPG programme offers an opportunity to expand access to cleaner cooking energy while creating a platform for further investment in the downstream gas industry.

For the Federal Government, the activation in Akwa Ibom represents another step in efforts to deepen grassroots LPG penetration and promote wider utilisation of Nigeria’s gas resources.

As the distribution programme progresses, attention will be on effective beneficiary selection, transparent distribution and continued access to LPG after the initial intervention.

The long-term success of the programme will depend on affordability, reliable supply, appropriate infrastructure, safety awareness and the development of a sustainable LPG distribution network.

The courtesy visit therefore marks more than a formal engagement between government officials. It sets the stage for a broader conversation about how Akwa Ibom can leverage its gas resources to improve household energy access, support businesses, create employment and attract investment.

With the pilot activation and LPG cylinder distribution taking place in Uyo, the programme is expected to further strengthen the state’s role in Nigeria’s evolving gas economy.

This report is based on information provided by the Akwa Ibom State Government concerning the courtesy visit and the planned LPG programme. Implementation details and beneficiary arrangements remain subject to official updates from the relevant authorities.
