Messi Fined by MLS for Slapping Opponent During Heated Match

Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi has been fined by Major League Soccer (MLS) after he slapped Philadelphia Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan during a heated encounter between the two teams.

The incident occurred during Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw with Philadelphia Union on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, with the disciplinary action announced by MLS on Friday. The league did not disclose the amount of the fine.

Messi Penalised After Late-Match Confrontation

The incident happened in second-half stoppage time when Messi approached Sullivan near the centre circle while play was taking place elsewhere on the pitch.

After the two players exchanged words, Messi made contact with Sullivan around the back of his neck with an open hand. The Philadelphia player then confronted Messi before officials intervened and separated the pair.

Although Messi was not shown a card during the incident, MLS subsequently reviewed the footage and imposed a financial penalty.

The league’s Disciplinary Committee said Messi had violated its policy concerning the use of hands against an opponent’s face, head or neck.

No Suspension for Messi

The punishment is a financial fine rather than a suspension, meaning Messi remains available for Inter Miami’s upcoming fixture.

The MLS decision is significant because the incident occurred during an increasingly tense match that eventually saw other players involved in a separate confrontation.

Inter Miami defender Ian Fray was also fined an undisclosed amount for a separate incident involving contact with Sullivan during the same match.

Messi Had Earlier Made His Mark on the Game

Despite the controversy, Messi was one of Inter Miami’s key performers during the match.

The Argentine scored Miami’s second goal to put his side temporarily ahead before Philadelphia eventually equalised for a 2-2 draw.

The goal was particularly emotional for the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner as it was his first since the recent death of his father, Jorge Messi. Messi also provided an assist during the encounter.

The result nevertheless extended a difficult spell for Inter Miami, who were unable to hold on to their advantage against Philadelphia.

More Disciplinary Action After the Match

Messi was not the only player to face disciplinary consequences following the heated encounter.

Inter Miami’s Ian Fray received a separate fine for making contact with an opponent’s neck, while Philadelphia’s Cavan Sullivan initially received a red card during another stoppage-time confrontation.

However, Sullivan’s red card and associated suspension were later rescinded following a successful appeal to an Independent Review Panel. He was consequently cleared to play in Philadelphia’s next match.

The series of disciplinary decisions illustrates how the MLS reviews incidents that may not have been fully dealt with by officials during live play.

Messi’s Reputation Adds Attention to Incident

The punishment has attracted considerable attention because of Messi’s status as one of the world’s most recognised footballers.

The Argentine superstar is generally known for his performances rather than disciplinary controversies, making the incident an unusual moment in his MLS career.

However, MLS regulations apply to all players, regardless of their profile or status.

The league’s decision also sends a message that physical contact involving an opponent’s head, face or neck can attract retrospective punishment even when a referee does not issue a card during the match.

Inter Miami Turn Attention to Next Match

With the disciplinary matter settled through a fine, Messi can now focus on Inter Miami’s upcoming fixtures.

The club will hope that its captain’s attacking contribution can help improve its results after the draw against Philadelphia.

For Messi, the Philadelphia match will be remembered for two very different reasons: a goal and assist that helped Inter Miami secure a point, and a late confrontation that resulted in his first reported MLS fine connected to the incident.

The amount of the fine remains undisclosed, but the punishment does not currently prevent the Argentine from taking part in Inter Miami’s next game.

This report is based on the MLS disciplinary decision and reports from Reuters, Associated Press and other international news organisations. The fine amount was not publicly disclosed by MLS.
