SAB Ambassadors for Umo Eno: Building a Grassroots Movement Around Performance and Continuity

Thomas Thomas
In every political season, there are groups that emerge merely to add another name to the long list of political associations. There are, however, others that seek to build a political structure around a particular conviction: that leadership should be judged by performance, continuity and the impact of governance on the people. SAB Ambassadors for Umo Eno belongs to the latter category.
Spearheaded by Engr. Udeme Obo as State Coordinator and Thomas Thomas as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, SAB Ambassadors for Umo Eno is positioning itself as a grassroots sociopolitical movement committed to mobilising support for three political causes in Akwa Ibom State: the reelection of Senator Aniekan Bassey, PhD, to represent the Akwa Ibom North East (Uyo) Senatorial District; the reelection of Governor Umo Eno, PhD; and the return of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The organisation says its political mission is rooted not merely in party loyalty but in what it describes as the records of the three leaders and the need for continuity in governance.
For the group, the argument is straightforward: where elected leaders have demonstrated capacity, programmes and policies that supporters consider beneficial to the people, the electorate should have the opportunity to renew their mandates.
Speaking on the philosophy behind the organisation, State Coordinator Engr. Udeme Obo said SAB Ambassadors for Umo Eno was established with a clear and focused political objective.
โOur objective is very simple. We want to mobilise our people from the grassroots and support leaders whose records, in our assessment, justify continuity. We are not trying to create confusion in the political space or pursue a hundred different objectives. We have identified Senator Aniekan Bassey, Governor Umo Eno and President Bola Tinubu as leaders whose mandates we believe should be renewed, and we are building the structures required to achieve that objective,โ Obo said.
According to him, the groupโs strategy is deliberately grassroots-oriented. Rather than limiting its activities to political meetings at the urban centres, SAB Ambassadors for Umo Eno has been establishing structures across wards within the Uyo Senatorial District and extending its reach beyond the district.
Obo explained that the strength of any political organisation ultimately depends on its connection with ordinary citizens.
โPolitics is won at the grassroots. It is the people in the wards and communities who eventually make the difference on election day. That is why we have taken our structure to the wards. We want to engage people directly, listen to them, communicate our message and mobilise them around the candidates and causes we support,โ he said.
He added that the organisation draws considerably from people who were among the early builders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, describing them as members with longstanding commitment to the party.
โOur members are not people who suddenly discovered politics because an election is approaching. Many of them are founding and aboriginal members of the APC in Akwa Ibom. They have been part of the struggle to build the party and have remained committed to its ideals. That history gives us a strong foundation,โ Obo stated.
For the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Thomas Thomas, the organisation represents an attempt to convert political conviction into organised grassroots participation.
Thomas said the group believes that political support should be built around issues, records and the capacity of leaders to sustain development.
โWe are not approaching this as a campaign of empty slogans. We are saying that leadership must be assessed by what leaders have done, what they have initiated and what they are capable of doing if given another opportunity. Our responsibility as a political organisation is to take that message to the people and allow them to make an informed decision,โ he said.
According to Thomas, the decision to support Senator Aniekan Bassey, Governor Umo Eno and President Bola Tinubu is anchored in the belief that continuity can provide stability for ongoing programmes and policies.
โDevelopment requires continuity. You cannot continually disrupt programmes, policies and institutional processes and expect to achieve sustainable results. Where a government or representative has demonstrated what supporters consider to be measurable commitment and performance, there is a legitimate argument for continuity. That is the argument we are taking to the people,โ Thomas said.
He stressed that the groupโs growing ward structures were not designed simply as election-day machinery but as a network for sustained political engagement.
โWe want to build a movement that is present in the communities, not an organisation that appears only when elections are around the corner. Our ward structures are intended to create direct channels of communication between the organisation and the people. We want to understand their concerns, explain our political position and mobilise responsibly,โ he added.
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees further described the organisation as a coalition of individuals united by a political conviction rather than personal considerations.
โOur focus is bigger than any individual member of the organisation. We are interested in the larger political direction of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria. We believe in the candidates we are supporting, and we are prepared to work within the democratic process to persuade the people to support them,โ Thomas said.
The emergence and expansion of SAB Ambassadors for Umo Eno also reflects the increasingly important role of grassroots political organisations in shaping electoral narratives. In a political environment where formal party structures often operate alongside informal networks, such groups can provide additional channels for political communication and mobilisation.
For Obo, the task ahead is therefore one of organisation, persuasion and consolidation.
โWe have structures in every ward in the Uyo Senatorial District and beyond, but we are not stopping there. We will continue to strengthen these structures because our target is clear. We want to ensure that our message reaches every community and that our members understand why we are supporting Senator Aniekan Bassey, Governor Umo Eno and President Bola Tinubu,โ he said.
Thomas similarly maintained that the group would continue to expand its membership and grassroots presence while remaining focused on its stated political objectives.
โWe are building for the future. Our message is continuity based on performance, representation based on capacity and political support based on conviction. We will continue to mobilise, engage and persuade until our objective is achieved,โ he said.
As the political landscape ahead of the next electoral cycle continues to take shape, SAB Ambassadors for Umo Eno is seeking to establish itself as one of the grassroots platforms capable of translating political support into organised community mobilisation.
Its leadership insists that the mission is neither complicated nor hidden. It is a campaign for continuity, driven by the conviction that the records of Senator Aniekan Bassey, Governor Umo Eno and President Bola Tinubu deserve, in the groupโs assessment, another opportunity to serve.
For a movement whose structures are already spreading across wards and communities, the coming months will determine how effectively that conviction can be translated into sustained grassroots support and, ultimately, electoral outcomes.
